The Music Therapy Association of Ontario (MTAO) serves as a unifying body for music therapists: promoting, developing, and supporting the profession of music therapy in the province of Ontario.

Music therapy is the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Therapist Credentials

Music therapy programs are offered at the university level and include intensive study in the areas of music, psychology, and the application of music therapy techniques with various client populations. Graduates achieve an Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) degree, a Master of Music Therapy (MMT) or a Master of Music (Field: Applied Music and Health) (MMus) degree from a university approved by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT).
